The relay should be on the controller red wire, Not on the output side. There is a voltage regulator in the controller that you will interfere with by putting something on the output side. There is also a voltage sensor that sense under and over current that could be effected by the relay switching. It would probably set the fault light.

But yes for heavy use run a Relay on the controller.
