Cool Re: smart ForTwo CDI 800 cc turbo diesel

Thanks guys. Pics are a rare commodity, since Mercedes never made a manual public for the car. There's bootleg copies of the Workplace Information System around. Let me see what pics I can find...

It's a 3 cylinder engine, and it does 16 to 17 psi of boost. Rear-engined, rear-wheel drive 6 speed transmission. It has the Mercedes ESP system.

The car weighs about 1600lbs, it's about 5 feet wide and 8 feet long. Top speed on mine so far is 97 MPH. If I take it easy, I can get 70 mpg still. Flat out, it still gets 47 MPG

The simplified diagram is actually for it's gas powered cousin, but it is still 99% applicable.

The engine and transmission are slung up between and slightly aft of the rear wheels. The engine compartment is accessed through a hatch in the floor of the tailgate. There will be no room for an accessory tank in there, however the windshield washer fluid reservoir hidden behind the nose is fairly large.

I have a mechanic that is a former Mercedes racecar driver, and he does a lot of performance work on these cars out of his shop. I've been looking for way to get some more juice. I'll be talking to him about this installation.

My only concern is if it is necessary to remove the engine to access the post-intercooler attachment point for the system - that might make me re-evaluate the installation. The engine mounts on my car had to be redone after my wife ran over a deer (long story, but man this is a tough car), and my guy has said he never wants to do that job again.
