Which kit - 2ltII

Hey all

I have a 1986 Toyota 4Runner with an 1989 2ltII engine swapped in. This is a 2.4 litre, turbo charged, 4 cylinder, diesel engine. I am trying to figure out the best mods for me to do to get the best economy out of this engine. Any power I gain is a bonus. I have already gotten a 3 inch exhaust from the turbo back, with a straight through muffler. Next I want to start working on intake and temps. So, I'm looking into water injection, and/or intercoolers. My question is what would give me the absolute best results:

Will the stage 2 turbo diesel kit work with this old engine? I.e. my truck has no computer or ecu - does the kit require this, or will it work just fine?

a) No intercooler, just water/meth injection (stage 1, or stage 2?)
b) A front mount intercooler, with water/meth injection post intercooler (again, stage 1 or 2?)

I have read that you get a significant advantage from having a nozzle pre turbo - but this also puts it pre intercooler, which I've read is bad... so, out of all possible combinations, what will work best for me?

thanks
Spruce
PS One advantage I like to having an intercooler on the setup, is that if I ever do run out of water/meth, I still get some cooling benefits, which could be way good.

The 2.4 Toyota motor responds extreamly well to a D01 nozzle pre-turbo and D03 at the intake. The pre-turbo location does not really play a factor in your flow calculation nore is there anything left after it exits the turbo. Now if you put the nozzle after the turbo that's when you run into issues with pooling. The pre-turbo is quickly turn to vapor as it exits the turbo.

Nothing wrong with running both intercooler and the water injection, just now you will have to cranck up your boost a bit if you add a front mount because you will get a boost drop. The pre-turbo injection can aid with this because you normally get a psi or more boost out of it.

Though it's not in the store yet our new DVC-30 controller has a built in 30psi map sensor so it will work with your truck, The regular controller would require you to use a 2bar or 3bar map sensor that the controller will power and read.

You can call the shop about ordering the new controller with your kit.

Universal Kit – DVL5106 - $375

Controller – DVC30 - $175

It also has a built in input for a fluid level switch to tell you when it's time to refill the tank.

2lt(2) normally has a boost sensor (map sensor) which runs the emmision system. however it could have been left out during the conversion.

i think the D01 + D03 is a little bit big for those. proberly better with D01 + D02.

intercoolers on them can be a pain to fit. trouble with a lot of the front mounts is the intake pipes are often the closest thing to the ground, so if you bottom the nose out you smash the pipes. top mount is ok but they usually do a body lift so it can fit under the bonnet. top mount really needs a fan to assist the air flow.
theres heaps of write ups on how to do those.

Old school Turbo diesels like these like the higher amount due to the highly inefficient turbos on them. The standard size most are running on this motor from our customers in South Africa, Austraila and the Philippines is a DO3 at the intake for the best peformance in a single nozzle system. Some have a 1gph pre-turbo which all have stated has made a big difference, Some run Dual D02 nozzles as well. We are very familiar with the early 90's 4cly turbo diesel engines and what they like as far as nozzle size for performance.

There is a long thread on this particular engine. http://www.alcohol-injection.com/for...-4td-1167.html

Re: Which kit - 2ltII

i was chatting to terry about his set up some time ago. if i remember correctly he was having trouble with D02+D02 making it stumble in cooler weather. concidering hes running modded turbo and 15(?) psi boost, going down to a D01 + D02 would be somewhat safer starting point (especially if running stock boost).

Colder temps will make a bit of a difference, I also believe he has a boost activated system not progressive. You can tune that out with adjusting the controller. I run a D03 right after the intercooler and D01 pre-turbo in my Starex in the Philippines but with a 3bar controller with built in MAP sensor. Night and day difference on that old 2.5L.

You definetly need a controller for the 3gph on that set up.

Cool - thanks for the info. Definitely over the next few weeks I'll be putting an order in.
