Hi guys, I own a 2005 800 cc smart ForTwo turbo diesel up here in Canada. Great little car, but it comes with a blazing 40 hp. I've improved intake and exhaust and remapped the engine. It now has approximately 65 hp. The turbo puts out about 1.2 bar of pressure. The hp to weight ratio is now similar to a Ford Focus, and the exhaust smoke isn't bad. Have you done anything for these vehicles yet? Can you make a recommendation for a kit? |

We have not done one of these but of course we don't know what half the vehicles people put these on just from orders alone. We do plenty of turbo diesels that is for sure. With this vehicle I would either get the 4cly turbo diesel kit and request a D01 nozzle. Or a universal stage 2 kit with 2.5 bar controller with a DO1 nozzle. You can use the controller to fine tune the output diesels tend to like more than gas engines. Most our 2L 4cly turbo diesel owners run a D02 nozzle. You should be able to squeeze a easy 20% more power out of the motor. |

Thanks guys. Pics are a rare commodity, since Mercedes never made a manual public for the car. There's bootleg copies of the Workplace Information System around. Let me see what pics I can find... It's a 3 cylinder engine, and it does 16 to 17 psi of boost. Rear-engined, rear-wheel drive 6 speed transmission. It has the Mercedes ESP system. The car weighs about 1600lbs, it's about 5 feet wide and 8 feet long. Top speed on mine so far is 97 MPH. If I take it easy, I can get 70 mpg still. Flat out, it still gets 47 MPG ![]() The simplified diagram is actually for it's gas powered cousin, but it is still 99% applicable. The engine and transmission are slung up between and slightly aft of the rear wheels. The engine compartment is accessed through a hatch in the floor of the tailgate. There will be no room for an accessory tank in there, however the windshield washer fluid reservoir hidden behind the nose is fairly large. I have a mechanic that is a former Mercedes racecar driver, and he does a lot of performance work on these cars out of his shop. I've been looking for way to get some more juice. I'll be talking to him about this installation. My only concern is if it is necessary to remove the engine to access the post-intercooler attachment point for the system - that might make me re-evaluate the installation. The engine mounts on my car had to be redone after my wife ran over a deer (long story, but man this is a tough car), and my guy has said he never wants to do that job again. Sadly, the diesel is not available in the states. This year, the new gas model just became available through the Penske dealers in the USA. The car has been in Europe since 1998. In Canada it became available during 2005 through to 2007, but they sold only the diesel version up here. They sold 4 times (about 12,000 units total sold) what they estimated would sell in Canada, and many people believe that was a big part of the decision to revamp the car and try it in the states. The new car isn't turbo, isn't a Getrag 6 speed, and it is a touch longer than the original. There are a few other nice things missing from the new version. There is hope for future model years. The Mercedes Bluetec diesel is rumoured to be coming down the pipe. A turbo is coming for N.A., and when it does, Brabus will work it's magic on the car. They were able to make the old gas version put out a reliable 101 HP, which made it very interesting. The new Brabus tuned version will likely be quicker. As you can probably tell, I like the car. LOL. Lots more info at the car club website I'm part of: Club smart car |
