I remember reading that thread a while ago and it sounds pretty simple mod. Looking at the pictures I don't understand how the control arm doesn't fall into the chamber when you pull out the pushrod and then prevent you from putting it back in after you turn it? Does the control arm only move when the pump is working? Anyway, I want to do this but I kind of want to get my timing issues sorted first. I did grind on the manifold but it seemed like I could only go enough to maybe get to the line, let alone advance it and that would be pushing it (maybe putting a hole in the intake). Maybe we have different intakes. Anyway, I think I'll just advance it by jumping a gear tooth under the cover and then doing some calculations to correlate the radius correctly and get a new line I can go off of. Snow in the mountains here keeps distracting me, nearly ski bumming time again. Must...focus...on....finals. Doh!!!! |

Mate, my aligment mark isn't that far out. I wonder if it has slipped a cog on the injection pump. The metering pin that follows the metering rod is free-floating. As long as you don't play with the throttle linkage while the rod is out, everything is fine. If you do play with the throttle linkage, it will extend out into the well and you can't get the rod back in. No big deal, just stick something down in the well and push the pin back into the side. I always set my timing by the seat of the pants. I've never had a distributor or fuel injection pump that ever lined up with the marks. |

Cool, thanks for the info on the pump mod. Yeah I've always done my timing by the seat of the pants as well but I can tell the pump is retarded just from the way she drives, smoke on the gear changes, high EGT's, doggish at low rpms, etc. I wonder if I could just get a different intake as I'm sure that the belt's in the right spot under the cover? Maybe I have a different boost compensator w/ slightly different dimensions? Anyway, I'll figure it out one way or another... |

Retarded? Try moving the injection pump further from the engine, that will advance the timing. Take a look at the radiator fan, it will show you which way the timing belt moves.

Nah, engine rotates clockwise viewed from front so moving pump towards the intake advances the timing, i.e. pulley aligns w/ theoretical vertical line through pump on each rotation before it hits the timing mark under the cover. I've advanced the timing, confirmed by timing tools, on the earlier 2l north american toyota diesels the same way. Moving the pump away would retard it further...
