The Black Wire

Does the black wire from the controller need to be connected to the black wire of the powerdrop? I was hoping it was just a ground and I could connected to a "good ground" else where. It seems to be a major PITA to get to my power drop wires. For the positive, I was going to use Slopoke's alternate power supply wiring.

I have mine connected to the powerdrop but some cars require a body ground and a stronger positive remote connection.
