controller fried?

recently i did an engine swap in my truck and i had some grounding issues for a while, once i fixed the poor grounds everything worked again but of course the methanol controller didn't work(i find these controllers to be very fragile, this is my second one). the controller had the power light lit the whole time. i checked the Grey wire and it was not putting off 5 volts to power the map sensor so i robed the 5v source from the stock 1 bar map to get it working and the map sensor works and sends out a signal to the controller but still no worky. this is not the first time this has happened, same symptoms last time the voltage regulator failed in the controller, so i though the voltage regulator just sent power through the grey wire to power the map sensor, i though by bypassing this the controller would still work? am i wrong, does the voltage regulator being fried basicaly mean the whole controller is worthless?

this is a progressive kit, the controller is only about a year old since it was last replaced. last time it was warrantied for what i think is the same problem im having now, fried voltage regulator.

i just dont understand why these controllers are so fragile? i mean, i had a bad ground, so i totally understand its my own fault but come on, my radio, sub, amp, speakers, guages, wide band, ect all came right back to life when i fixed the cab ground... the methanol injection was the only thing to go. i really like the kit when it works, and the customer service cant be beat, i have been taken care of several times. im just a little confused as to why these controllers are so wimpy, shouldnt the fuse have blown and saved it first?

thanks in advance.

Re: controller fried?

It's the PWM with a bad ground that is a issue PWM is a tricky thing with electronics this smal the controllers actually work harder at partial duty cycle then at full. Micro-controllers are very sensitive to the excess heat unfortunately and everything has to be hooked up just right. If the micro-controller (pretty much a CPU) Goes the controller cannot think.

We have actually done a complete redesign on the controllers which should be out in a few weeks. The new controllers have a few other new features I won't mention just now but they will only get 43 degrees over ambient temps no matter what. The main feature is the pulsing of the ground vs the power which makes a huge difference in longevity and load you can put on them.

ok cool. im really glad to hear that becasue i was lookign into buying a different brand controller becasue i was worried about spending 150$ on something that iv had such terrible luck with. the problem is, no other company makes as nice of a controller in my opinion, they are all big and bulky and pretty much just cheesey looking compared to the devils own kit. iv always really like the whole kit and cant really find another brand controller i like. im glad to hear that there probably isnt a tougher controller out there, i just need to be more carefull. it seems like they are all fragile the way you make it sound.

its not that i expected it to take a beating with a bad ground, its just that my truck is a massive project, im always working on it. i left a ground strap off after an engine swap, not a huge deal, pretty common mistake, but of course the methanol injection bites the dust. to be honest i though the devils own controller was just a cheepey, its the cheepest one and i figured you get what you pay for but now i dont think thats the case. i guess i just need to be much more carefull, i didnt think these things were suposed to be so fragile, thanks for explaining it.

now im excited to see what the new controller is like, does it look the same physicly? will cost any more?

thanks alot for the info.

Re: controller fried?

I will get you fixed up. Just email me. the controlers are not really fragel. We really don't have many problems with them. You do have to be careful with not grounding out the grey wire. and then you also have to be carefull about the pump, controller or a seperate map sensor having a poor ground. Other bad grounds in your truck should not cause an issue unless you have a nasty feedback.
