Here's the write up I posted on the miata.net forum. Thanks for all the help, Bilal. mpp I have recently installed a water injection kit from http://devilsownonline.com on my 2000 w/BR Performance MP62 blower and had promised to give an update when it was finished. I came upon the http://devilsownonline.com site and found that their water/alcohol kit has been getting wide use in the Grand Prix and SRT-4 markets. I liked the 3D capabilities of the Aquamist kit but thought the price was way too high. The D.O. kit uses a 150 psi adjustable shurflo pump but the cool trick is a controller that can set the onset boost pressure and the pressure at which the pump is outputting the maximum set volume. This gives you control of the onset, the ramping rate and the maximum output of the pump. That's a LOT more control than the simple single or dual pressure sensor kits out there for a similar price. The controller can read any 2 or 3 bar MAP sensor (I went ahead and ordered a 2 bar GM sensor with mine). I'm going to see if I can live without my intercooler (get back a few PSI boost) while keeping the timing advanced closed to OEM (we'll see). Bilal, the owner, seems to be extremely responsive to PMs on the D.O. forum and has been very good at answering my questions (he also shipped very quickly). Pictures of the kit and notes about the installation are up on my website: http://pickettweb.com/miata/DOWI/ The installation is pretty easy. He gives you a wiring harness for the controller and prewires the pump harness. You have to wire in the MAP sensor (all three go to controller harness) since you can use the one you've got in your car or any 2 or 3 bar sensor). He pre-terminates 2 ends of the injector hose and gives you 2 extra connectors so you can cut the right length for the water/alchohol tank (push on connectors). He installs a checkvalve in the injector hose. Tie wraps and electrical connectors are included and the pump has a vibration deadening mount preattached (but you have to provide your own screws and nuts to attach to your car). The pump is preset to around 60 PSI (but will evidently push over 180 PSI if you need it). The controller is not preset to any particularly useful settings (differs for each car). You'll have to spend a little time setting the onset on injection (2 psi prior to ping) and the onset of max injection (2 psi below max boost seems like a good rule of thumb). Since I've got the blower and a remote filter kit, I was short on free mounting space in the engine compartment. I made a bracket to mount the pump behind the engine (near the firewall) on the passenger side (see pics). There are plenty of online directions both on the SRT-4 and the Grand Prix (devilsownonline.com) forums. None are specific to Miatas. I decided to inject right before the intake although later I may add a smaller pre-blower injector to see if it is a good combo. Bilal (dvldoc) is great about answering PM questions. By the way, he's a Navy medical technician - the folks who deliver a lot of combat emergency care (the nickname for these folks are "devil docs"). Here's a link to the SRT-4 forum "DevilsOwn" site. The first topic is an installation doc. There's a good topic on how the shurflo pump works. http://www.srtforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=218 Summary: It seems to be a very good deal. Using a 67.5mm pulley I'm seeing boost at readline in the 12 psi range. I'm using an M5 nozzle with the injection pump set between 60-80psi can easily take all ping out of the system (65mm pulley next?). Bilal has suggested trying an M3 nozzle at higher pump pressure, so I'll see how that works next. Following the tips on Bilal's forum, I'm using -20* methanol/water windshield washer fluid (around 99 cents/gallon). The only "gotcha" I had was when I turned the pump pressure up over 120psi during testing on a hot day and the checkvalve popped off the hose (zip tie worked until it got hot). I resecured using fuel hose clamps and everything has remained great. I now need to lean out my fueling a bit to take advantage of the new ping resistance. |
