Well i am a Ford Mopar man at heart, i have owend 10 mustangs and of those there were a few rare pieses that I wish i knew what I had but hey it was the 70's and early 80' In 82 i dought my first Mopar 72 Demon 340 with alot of head work and the first street car in my area running a methanol set up that got me into the high 10's with 10.82@122MPH being my best. not to bad for a 3200lb car 26 years ago. This was pre parts eras for all you young guns as most things had to be made if you didnt own a bow tie. Had several other whoooppties that were alot of fun and most all of them were 4spd small blocks with a bottle somewhere. In 1992 I bought my 1st Chevy only to prove a point but at that time Chevelles were not the car of choice like the Camaros and Nova's and Monza and there was always the Vega...lol This was a origanal 69SS 396 375hp and of course Black on Black. The only thing bad about it was a sissy stick You see when I was growing up you had a 4spd and if you didnt well then ... you just didnt..lolol This was about the time Hot Rod started the Fastest Street car in America. I was seriously thinking to do itn but in the mean time I took an offer for my 396 375 in the Chevelle, this guyu was a Super Stock racer and needed a motor for his chassis that had all the numbers for SS racing. He paid me 2 1/2 times what I had given for the whole car.So now i needed a motor and big blocks are every where. I heard about a motor at are local engine shop that a guy left town and never paid the bill. It was a 454 .060 heavy TRW 13 5 to 1 slugs and a roller cam with a set of GM heads.I paid 1000.00 so i got a deal and a friend who was into these big boats had a friend who took his Dominator and intake of his 502 Mercrusier. I got it put a plate on it and went to see what it would do. 1st pass on motor 12.60 dont remember the MPH so i played around with the little stuff and got it down to 12.40 thru the mufflers but on a 26 INCH tall and 8 wide worew out slicks..lol Last pass it was time to spray so i waited till it got to the top of 1st and BANG ot was spinning those little slicks but it was fun and to my surprise 11.45.Well that set the wheels in motion over the next 4 months I put a methanol FI system on it and I used race gas on my nitrous side. I wanted a 9.99 so bad and all it would do was haze the tires to a 10.0 for 4 weeknds straight 10.1 or a teasing 10.00.. so I had made up mind i was going to tub this car and go race the Hot Rod deal and this was the last weekend before the strip down.Once again 10.0 and on the last pass it felt funny like it was not hitting on all 8 but what did i care if it went I had fun all year and never really broke anything. now I didnt tell you i could never use the nitrous untill midway 2nd gear as the mathanol and race gas N2O was a hard hitting set up but I was going to try it off the line 1 last time, so i staged and it was missing a bity and I made a 4 wheel line lock as it would load the chassis and not shock it so hard . The lights came down I was was off it was about 4" in the air and not spinjni9ng at all I was tearing up the track got to the end and it was really bad so I popped the hood and it was just a spark plug wire put it on and it ran fine got my time slip..lolol 9.89 140 on 7 cyl. not to shabby for a Ford man.. Anyway here is a Pic of that car when i was done if any of you followed the Hot Rod deal or just read the mags and also Car Craft you might remember seeing this one. It was #1 qualifier at Memphis 94 and in several magazines features I still miss this car more then any of them even myGT350 let me know what you think If you remember before they had Pro Mods as street cars we had to drive a full 25 miles and in 1 hour after the drive we had to qualify it was a 598ci with a lenco 4spd Top Gun nitrous and 3500lbs it ran 7.80 @168 This was a fun car to drive around town and down the strip. It had a full billet tilt collum with power windows and nice pull out stereo and an amp. I was the 7th person to run in the 7's but because i ran Borla they wouldnt give it to me because i wasnt running the trash cans that Flowmaster made and that was a Flowmaster seris race and lot of polotics so theres that little part of my life. I sold the car in 98 one of the saddest days in my life and longest road trip home.. Last edited by Racer704; 07-14-2008 at 09:33 PM. |

That it was sir, it is I sad to say I had a bounty on my car and me to get knocked out of that spot. I ened up doing it to myself on the 3rd qualifing pass and it melted down..I didnt have the time to take out that rod and race or I would have..lol You know i should have gotten that bounty money...It was Flowmasters people that told everyone there they would pay them if they took my #1 spot Oh well and now you know the rest of the story..lolol Flowmaster even got Hot Rod to only put in a very very small black and whit pic of the car for the Memphis story..lol You see flowmaster spent huge money advertising as Borla at that time put it to there products. I was the only car there with Borla collector mufflers and there were 40 cars i think in are class, I cant tell you how many fans came to tell me how much better my car sounded then all the rest. It was a much cleaner instalation also as you saw no muffler and only a 4"outlet at the front of the rear tire. Flowmaster sent me the 1st pair of 5" cans and i sent them back and told them if they cant make something look a littler btter then i wont run them abd said no thank you. johnny |

I had so much fun running that car around the country, but the best was having a close friend like Rod Saboury as he and i matched raced all over the east coast and mid west together. You know the things i remember the most about all my travles racing that car was the road trips. They were alot of fun and people always wanting to look at the car and then you were 2 hours late by the time you got there as you didnt want to be rude to people..lolol. That was when it was for the love of the sport.I worked hard keepinbg that car up and running but nothing like i do on this Vette we have. Almost to much to enjoy, you will work on it 60 hours plus for 5 to 6 passes and if you hurt something then double the time... But it is tghe worst drug there is the need for speed. johnny |
