Well, I've found out that methanol is a controlled substance in Japan, which means it's not really available to the general public (until I become friendly with someone in a construction/painting firm). However, while trawling the hardware stores I managed to find something in the pain section which seemed to be a Toluene/Meth mix of some descript. I'm not so sure what the meth content was on it as it was poorly labelled and I doubt the store would know either. Was wondering if I could use this in a distilled water/meth+toluene mix. It was about $35 for 16 or 17l of it which is probably as good as it's going to get here. Thanks for any advice in advance |

You will destroy the pumps seals. There are other alcohols, You can use denatured alcohol, Hell you can use Cheap vodka or Gin, 80 to 90 proof,. Denatured is ethyl alcohol poisoned with a bit of methanol, Ethyl alcohol is the stuff you drink. In a pinch you can also use rubbing alcohol, I know in the Philippines you can buy iso and Ethyl alcohol in any pharmacy or grocery store.

They do sell winter formula washer fluid there, I know that for sure, Are you military? If so just go on base and get it, Because they also sell gas line antifreeze which is 100% methanol. We even have it here in Guam. The other choice is like I said the cheapest gin or vodka you can find or other grain alcohols. 90 proof is 45% ethyl alcohol, Hell they had a sale on base for some gin 2 liters for 5 dollars and it was 90 proof, Went right in the tank 2 days ago. |

I'm not but I have contacts who are. Problem is, they have stopped selling the 100% methanol antifreeze on base which is why I'm looking for off-base subsitutes. Would love to actually power my car with gin or vodka to be honest, so may have a look at that route! |

Do you have a Kawachi or a Joyful Yamashin there? They both sell a mix of methanol/ethanol as fuels. At Kawachi it's in the medicine area in a yellow bottle with a fire on it. In Yamashin its a clear bottle, and used for lamp. Both are 500 ml for about 300 yen. The cheapest WWF can be found at Joyful Honda, and is 40 or 45% for 175 I think. iF you need pics of what to look for, let me know. My Yamashin still has the winter formula WWF sitting on the shelves.

Never heard of those stores to be honest (damn backward Okinawa!). Will check out a few of the larger drug stores though and see what I can find. So Yamashin is an outdoors store? BTW, where in Japan are you? |

I'm in Mito, Ibaraki, Japan. If you have a drugstore or a home center in your area, it should be ok. Just look for lamp stuff, then look on the back. Should be 75-95% meth, and the rest ethanol. They also sell pure ethanol, but it's VERY expensive. Running WWF will be much cheaper, unless you want to run 100% alcohol. What drugstores/home centers do you have in Okinawa? |

I think we have chains that are not heard of on the mainland! Makeman is a popular one, along with Kanehide Home Center. Will do some searching in the shops and outdoors places. I have noticed that pure ethanol is ridiculously expensive. I may be dumb here, but what's WWF (apart from World Wrestline Federation, and I don't think The Undertaker will fit in my meth tank!)? Please tell me you have meth in your Daihatsu Move! That's awesome! |
