Had a quick look at washer fluid. Thanks for the links - the Subaru stuff looks decent. May have to check out how much it retails for.

Done a bit more looking on Yahoo Auctions Japan at what stuff is commonly available and it looks like I'll have to make a decision. I could get 26% methanol in WWF for $1.55/litre or 75% ethanol for $2.55/litre.

Still expensive, Did you check the liquer store on base, I know they have 90 proof gin here for around 5 for 2 litters. thats 45% alcohol. I use that last time we did a dyno in the PI, The only difference was about 5 to 8hp between ethyl alcohol vs methanol but that's on a turbo diesel and they pick up way more power.

Didn't manage to check liqour prices on base as I'm a civilian and need my base contacts to do that. Off base it's a no-go though: the cheapest vodka and gin I saw was $16 a litre!

Good god man, that's crazy. Looks like I'm marking off Japan on my list for a last duty station.

Have you checked the japanese shochu and sake for alcohol content. I know they sell the stuff in gallon containers in my area.

Yeah, it can be pretty steep. I think one factor here in Okinawa is that off-base there is a limited supply of brands. Like, all the pharmacies sell exactly the same single brand of ethanol and all at the same price (give or take a few cents). With things like gin or vodka, it is all either imported Smirnoff type stuff at high prices or Japanese-made stuff at similar prices.

I did, although the main firewater down here in Okinawa is called awamori and the 30% alcohol stuff is about $18 a gallon. Didn't look extensively though as was looking mainly for methanol so that could be another option.

Thinking of giving the 75% ethanol a go and see how I get along with it. Once it's run out I might compare with 25% meth and see how that goes.

Got a link? If I went higher than 50% it would be cheaper I think to go that route. But for the current car I don't think that an M1 would use that much fuel.
