So distilled water is $50 for 18 liters, and has to be ordered from a science supply company. Not worth it. So, what suggestions do people have for watering down the winter washer fluid?

Found some in smaller containers, but it is more expensive than the 40% meth washer fluid. Maybe I will just stay at 35-40 mix unless I can build a distiller.

To be honest with the new fittings you really don't need distilled water. Good old bottled water or filtered water will work fine. We have never seen a clog nozzle issue. Just run some lime cleaner through the system about once every 6 months and you'll be good.

That's interesting stuff. If I can keep on getting this purified water cheaply though then I'll continue doing so. If not I'll just use bottled water from time to time. | |

Hi, If you've got the old type of freezer that is not self defrosting, the ice that has to be defrosted every so often gives virtually the same as distilled water, as long as you filter out the odd pea or chicken leg that escaped! Don't use the ice from the ice tray, because this is from water from the tap - or wherever - but the ice that collects around the rest of the unit has come from atmospheric water vapour, and should be pretty good - and cheap. Unfortunately, you'd have to be defrosting a lot of freezers to keep up with demand.

soldave, I found out from expatjapan.com that the battery fluid containers, that look like the windshield wiper fluid bottles but are a dark blue color. are distilled water. They are between 195-300 yen for 2L. Cheaper than the purified water you buy.

Dust - thanks, although we only get 1 brand of battery fluid down here in Okinawa. It's in black bottles and I thought it would be perfect but on the contents it says it contains pure water and "additives". Now I have no idea what additives it's talking about and what proportion they are in the mixture so I'm gonna steer clear. Will keep my eyes open in case any places start selling other stuff though. |
